Silene maritima - Ice Cups

This white-blooming sea campion is at once a very hard-working ground cover & a plant with lots of personality. It first forms a mat of slender grayish-green leaves in spring. These are followed by a great many inch long, tubular flowers with open-faced white petals. The backside 'tubes' lead to this vigorous plant's other common name - Bladder plant. Native to the UK, where it is found on cliffs, rocky outcrops, even on sand dunes, it is a great choice for a sunny ground cover, for spilling out of a hanging basket or mixed in with a dry garden bed. It is very drought tolerant once established. Attracts hummingbirds. Plant in poor to fertile, well-drained soil in sun to light shade. Cut to the ground in winter to flush out vibrant new growth in spring. Deer resistant.
