Papaver hybridum ‘Lauren’s Grape’ is one of those rare annual poppies that feels perennial in spirit—not because it survives year after year, but because once you grow it, you’ll never want to be without it. We trialed a handful of purple-toned poppies many seasons ago, and most were fleeting or uneven in color. ‘Lauren’s Grape’ is the clear standout. Its blooms are a saturated, velvety grape-purple—an unusually rich shade in the poppy world—and the plants return reliably from seed wherever they’re allowed to settle.

Growing to about 2–3' tall and 1–1.5' wide, each plant sends up graceful, wiry stems topped with fully cupped flowers from late spring into early summer. When the first flush begins to fade, a light deadheading will often coax out a second wave, though even the seed capsules are ornamental—upright, sculptural, and prized for dried arrangements. Bees adore the generous pollen, and you’ll often see them buried deep within the petals on warm mornings.

The foliage is a soft, gray-green and finely cut, giving the plant a delicate look despite its sturdy nature. Once seedlings are established, ‘Lauren’s Grape’ is surprisingly drought tolerant and happiest in lean soil with full sun. Too much fertility causes it to flop. Allow the final pods to mature and shatter, and you’ll have a gentle self-sown colony that reappears each year in natural drifts. Thin seedlings to maintain vigor, but otherwise it asks little.

With minimal care beyond thinning and the occasional deadhead, ‘Lauren’s Grape’ rewards you with one of the most dramatic and unforgettable purples in the garden.
